Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI), together with the Planetary Health Alliance Japan Hub (PHA-J), is co-hosting the public symposium “Planetary Health: Toward Improving Well-being in a Rapidly Changing Global Environment,” organized by the Science Council of Japan (SCJ) and to be held on Monday, September 7, 2026.
Since the Industrial Revolution, the expansion of human activity has accelerated climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution, eroding the resilience of the global environment and escalating risks to human health at a rate and scale never seen before. Addressing this calls for planetary health, an integrated approach that seeks to sustain and improve human health and well-being within the limits of the Earth’s environment. The task now is to advance practical, solution-oriented work in a transdisciplinary manner and build it into a broader social movement.
While scientific knowledge on planetary health has accumulated to a certain extent, there remains a need to grasp scientific evidence, economic rationality, and social value in an integrated manner and to reflect them appropriately in decision-making. At the same time, it is recognized that such knowledge has not been sufficiently translated into policymaking or social implementation, reflecting an implementation gap. Overcoming this challenge requires a co-creative approach that anticipates policy and social implementation from the research stage, with academia, government, industry, and civil society working together to develop feasible solutions.
This symposium will deepen understanding of the concept of planetary health, the knowledge accumulated to date, and the diverse initiatives and perspectives in the field. Building on that, it will discuss how to close the implementation gap in order to accelerate systemic change, and will explore a path toward integrating the role of the academic community with the collective wisdom of academia, government, industry, and civil society.
